In Mushroom Musume, you’re a childless recluse, growing old in your years, when a witch approaches you and offers you the gift of being able to have someone to raise and teach. You’re asked a series of questions to help determine what type of mushroom girl you get, as well as to set up hooks for later acts.

The game itself is a VN taking place over several acts, moving from the parent raising the child, into playing the child itself and making decisions for yourself as you try to navigate a human dominated world. I’m doing a lot to try and not spoil a ton of details, and the full version promises to include additional systems to help flesh out the game beyond just telling the story. Overall I was really impressed by what was included in the demo already for modifying the base Ren’Py engine look and feel and making something that really felt unique.

Mushroom Musume’s demo is still up for people to try and it’s got a Q1 2025 release date target. It promises a ton of replayability, while it only took me about a half hour to see through one story in the demo. With dozens of additional mushroom types, and story options, the game could really grow on you.
