Well, at least a limited supply of it. You need to figure out how to make more before it runs out. Welcome to Adaptory.

Starting out, you have some emergency oxygen cans you can stick in a machine and the tutorial will quickly let you know this. You only have a handful, so the tutorial will start to direct you into digging down into the meteor your crew has crashed into and start collecting materials. From there, you have a few options at your disposal. You can find more cans hidden away in the dirt below, it’s not very sustainable and you’re at the mercy of being lucky. Your more realistic options are growing some trees, which will require light, or, pumping water into an oxygen generator to split it into hydrogen and oxygen. Both options will require you to start generating electricity first.

For power, you’ll have a few options for that, you can trek outside in limited amounts to build solar panels where you’ve got a clear view of the sky. Alternatively, you can make a coal generator and fuel it with the abundant amounts of the stuff about, though you’ll be polluting the air in your base in the process. You can use this to your own advantage though, as the density of all the gases are simulated. You can use the coal and have the carbon dioxide sink down to your trees, which will produce oxygen which will rise upwards.

Adaptory seems to lean more into the physics interaction than similar games I’ve played so far. While the demo is just a limited peek into what’s possible, the Steam page and the roadmap on it’s Website talk about so much more to come. I’m really looking forward to the better gas management with vents, having accidentally made more than my share of mistakes with gases in the past. Not to mention more traditional survival mechanics like food production and storage.

I do keep meaning to do more videos to go with my reviews, and when I emailed the dev feedback for this back when I first played it in February, I said I would try to get a recorded playthrough done. So, better late than never!

Thankfully, this is one post going up before the game has already launched, with the game looking for a 2025 release date right now.
